A Stat-X suppression system recently extinguished a fire in the High Voltage Switch Room of a large piece of mining equipment at a mine in Western Australia. The system was one of a number of Stat-X systems installed by Chubb on mining equipment.

"The customer was very pleased with the Stat-X system which quickly extinguished the fire and prevented further damage to the multi-million dollar machine" said Tony O’Dwyer, Manager for Chubb Fire Safety in Bunbury, WA.

The Stat-X installation was one of the first completed by Chubb late last year, installed on a high wall miner — a large machine used to excavate the face of open cut mines. Chubb installed Stat-X systems to protect a High Voltage Switch Room and Lubrication room on the machine.

"The fire detection and control system quickly detected the fire that started when a ’breaker’ caught fire in the HV switch room and automatically discharged the Stat-X generator, immediately extinguishing the fire" said Tony.

Stat-X aerosol generators are self-contained extinguishing units. The generators act as their own storage, production and delivery devices, with a highly stable solid charge of aerosol-forming material contained inside stainless steel canisters. Upon activation, a controlled burn begins inside the canister, producing an ultra-fine aerosol which exits through discharge ports in the canister. Chemical interaction with the flame’s free radicals provides rapid fire suppression.

NASA Kennedy Space Centre recently installed 100 Stat-X Fire Suppression systems in the control areas, machine rooms and communications rooms of the crawlers which were built in 1966 and still carry space shuttles to the Kennedy launch pads for liftoff.
