Energy storage and fire risks: Understanding BESS safety

For over a century, battery technology has advanced, enabling energy storage to power homes, buildings, and factories and support the grid. The capability to supply this energy is accomplished through Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), which utilize lithium-ion and lead acid batteries for large-scale energy storage.

When a large amount of energy is squeezed into a tight space, there is a risk that it will escape uncontrolled. When this happens, fire is a common result, and explosions are possible.

Although the fire service routinely responds to explosive situations, such as those associated with natural gas leaks, standard operating procedures do not exist for scenarios like a battery energy storage system for which there is no way to cut off the gas supply.

The Risk

  • Lithium cells can undergo thermal runaway, emitting extremely hot and flammable gases.
  • In large storage systems, the failure of a single lithium cell can trigger a chain reaction.
  • The release of hot, flammable gases can potentially lead to explosions or fires.
  • The local fire service is often unaware and inexperienced with the fire and explosion hazards of BESS.

Stat-X fire suppression is currently protecting li-ion battery energy storage systems (BESS) and energy storage systems (ESS) worldwide. Find out more today.

A complete integrated systems for BESS fire suppression

The Stat-X total flooding system is proven to be effective on lithium-ion battery fires through extensive third-party testing. It limits thermal runaway, suppresses fire, integrates with various detection methods, and it activates based on temperature.

Condensed aerosol fire suppression agents are environmentally friendly, causing no-global warming or ozone depletion. Stat-X generators have a variety of operation methods based on the application and they are suitable for normally occupied and unoccupied areas.
