The Stat-X First Responder® is a handheld unit that is thrown into an enclosed space with an active fire. The operator removes the safety clip, twists, and pulls the ring pin, and tosses/rolls the unit close to the seat of the fire. After a short delay the unit releases 500 g of Stat-X aerosol over about 20 seconds, suppressing the fire and slowing its growth until hose lines or other resources are in place.

It weighs under 2.3 lb (1 kg), requires virtually no maintenance in service, and is carried by fire and rescue services, law enforcement, and utility and energy crews. The aerosol is the same potassium-based compound used in the UL and ULC listed Stat-X® fixed systems and is listed under the U.S. EPA SNAP program for normally occupied and unoccupied spaces.

The Stat-X First Responder is a professional tool for use under training and established emergency procedures; it is not sold for home use.

How it works

On actuation, a solid potassium-based compound inside the unit undergoes a controlled reaction that produces an ultra-fine condensed aerosol. The aerosol discharges at low pressure from ports around the base of the unit, distributes through the space in the manner of a gas, and interrupts the chemical chain reaction of combustion rather than removing oxygen. It remains suspended to guard against re-ignition for as long as the space stays closed. In the Stat-X First Responder, the reaction is started by an initiator with a built-in delay lever after the ring pin is pulled, so the unit can be thrown before discharge begins. Applications

  • Fire and rescue. Early attack on a room fire before hose lines are in place; suppression ahead of a crew where flashover conditions are developing; knocking down fire between a firefighter and a trapped occupant.
  • Law enforcement. Vehicle fires with occupants trapped, when officers arrive before the fire department; fires started by diversion devices during tactical operations.
  • Utility and energy crews. Fires in manholes and underground transformer or cable vaults, including rescue of a worker below grade, with the unit thrown away from the person.
  • Industrial, marine, and remote sites. Enclosed machinery, electrical, and process spaces where conventional firefighting equipment is not immediately available.

Coverage depends on the fire class and size, the enclosure volume, ceiling height, and ventilation. Testing has demonstrated that the Stat-X First Responder® provides significant fire suppression effectiveness in enclosed spaces. For enclosed environments, multiple units are recommended to achieve optimal coverage.

Additional units should be used in larger spaces, areas with high ceilings, or locations with substantial ventilation or air leakage.

Size and listings

Housing. Metal housing with internal insulating and cooling material. Discharge ports are located around the circumference of the housing. The housing accepts an M228 initiator and is non-pressurized before activation.

Initiator. Complies with MIL specification MIL-DTL-14943 (modified for output charge) and is 100% reliability testing by x-ray.

Safety. Dual safety device: a crimped safety pin that must be twisted before it can be pulled by its ring. The initiator includes a delay before activation.

Aerosol Agent. Potassium-based. Fifteen-minute time-weighted-average test data from an independent U.S. laboratory show that, at normal design application densities, the aerosol does not produce harmful levels of CO, CO2, or NOx by NIOSH criteria. The agent has zero ozone depletion potential, zero global warming potential, and zero atmospheric lifetime, and is listed under the U.S. EPA SNAP program for normally occupied and unoccupied spaces.

Use and storage. Remove the safety clip, twist and pull the ring pin, and throw the unit at or near the seat of the fire, then close the space. Do not throw the unit close to a person: the aerosol leaves the unit hot, and the housing remains hot after discharge.

The unit is single-use. See Specifications for the operating temperature. Service life is 10 years. Units are supplied in cartons of four, each unit in a clear protective sleeve, and ship as UN0432, Class 1.4S.
